Mine is a section of "Saturn Devouring His Son," painted by Francisco Goya around 1820. It was part of a series of paintings that he covered the interior walls of his house with. He was ostensibly going nuts and never showed the paintings to anybody. He just... painted them on his walls, and then died, and then the paintings were found.

I'm just in love with it. It's amazing, horrifying, tragic, beautiful. It's just brilliant.

The series is referred to as his "Black Paintings." They're the works of a haunted genius. When you combine an exceptional talent with an exceptional mental state with an exceptional ability to express that mental state through one's talents, you've got a glimpse into a part of the universe almost totally foreign to everyone who walks this earth. Look at Saturns eyes. How can you even capture that! I'm just so in awe of it.

My avatar is a poster for the amazing piece of cinema titled Step Off which features the most intense dj/producer battles ever captured on film. Basically it starts off like 8 Mile, the crowd is cheering, 2 guys step up on stage, in front of them is a table with 2 discmans on it. The first guy steps up, presses play on the cd player and as his track plays over the PA he strikes a tough guy pose and the crowd reacts. Then the other guy does the same exact thing. I'm not sure what happens next because I turned the movie off at this point, BUT I think it's awesome that someone out there actually thinks this is how dj battles work.

They're called "beat battles," and that pretty much is how they work.

lol they do this shit in reno at the grind time battles, shit kills me. i keep saying...does anyone play live beats? they don't know what that means. idk, it's slightly entertaining, yes.

Yeah, I have a friend that has won a few... Tried to get me involved, i couldn't do it, I think I'd feel too silly. If i can figure out a subversive enough angle, I'll consider it. ha

Some of my favorite DJ battle moments were Precyse vs. Abilities at 2000 Scribble Jam, when Abilities did "Can you guess who the faggot DJ is?" *switch to other turntable* "D-r-D-r-D-r-D-r-DJ Precyse!" Ah simpler times. Even though Abilities got completely robbed. Motherfuckers weren't ready.



Also Skratch Bastid vs. Brace in 2004 when Brace flipped Usher's "Yeah!" and reversed the beat while scratching "take that! take-take that!"

And then Skratch Bastid, during his Kanye "Get Em High" routine (throw your motherfuckin' haaands-- fuck, your mother, fucking your mother, fuck your mother"), suddenly cuts on-beat to "Yeah!" for a couple bars, and then he flipped back to "cause we don't wanna hear that weak shit no mooooore" and took "Yeah!" off his turntable and smashed it on the stage. Maybe the greatest filmed DJ Battle routine ever.
