I would sympathize a bit more with gomi's argument -- though certainly not his vigor -- if Ali was on record saying "oh, yeah, I'm actually African American, and I would be black if it wasn't for this albino thing." If he's guilty of anything, it's basically letting an untrue rumor spread about his identity that may or may not have benefited him in a way that some would consider unfair. As it is, though, I really don't think he ever directly claimed something one way or another. I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable picking apart the identity issues of a chubby albino dude who grew up poor and around a lot of people of different races and ethnicities. I don't look at him and think that there's some sort of malicious intent behind how he identifies, especially not these days.
this is wrong though. You can't name yourself Brother Ali, scream black power on stage, constantly complain about being albino, never indicate that you are white, consciously cultivate a (dumb) air of blackness around yourself, in every way imply that you are, in fact, genealogically black, but then, when people start actually believing that you're black
oh, its just some rumor, and my only fault here is not squashing it sooner (by several years)

MVRemix: Yeah we asked Slug about that, who’s actually light-skinned black -
Brother Ali: Slug is what almost all of us on Rhymesayers are, which is a mixture of different shit, including black, including white, including Native American. Almost everybody on Rhymesayers is a mixture of some different shit, and a lot of times we’re seen by white people as white rappers.
MVRemix: Puts you in a bit of a stereotype, doesn’t it.
Brother Ali: It’s something we have to work with, but I mean, I’m not white.
